In Memory
Naunheimer, Nick (1 Oct 13)
Age 73
Again this week we are saddened to learn that GGHG Association Member and former Paymaster of the Governor General’s Horse Guards, Nick Naunheimer, passed away peacefully early yesterday morning (October 1, 2013) at Victoria Hospice in British Columbia, following a brief struggle with cancer at age 73. In 2009 he lost his beloved wife Gerry and is now survived by his children Laura Myers (Gary), Nick Jr (Elizabeth), Jennifer and his 7 grandchildren.
Nick came to Canada from Germany at the age of 11 with his family and spent his formative years in Toronto and other towns in Ontario. Upon graduation from U of T, he embarked on his lifelong profession as a high school science teacher. Following retirement from teaching, he and Gerry moved to Victoria which they loved. Nick was a man with many diverse interests and talents. In addition to his appreciation of science, he loved horses – both riding and painting pictures of them. As Captain with the Governor General’s Horse Guards, he served in many capacities, including commanding the Calvary Squadron. When he was no longer able to ride, Nick turned his passion towards his art and exhibited in many art shows in Toronto and Victoria. Nick was very knowledgeable about classical music, always had a wonderful garden at each of his homes, delighted in cooking and eating and was known to enjoy the occasional glass of scotch. A tea was held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 2-4 at Songhees Community Centre at Songhees Retirement Park, Lekwammen Drive in View Royal, BC. for people to share their memories of Nick with his family. A private celebration was held in Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice would be welcomed.
Please remember Nick with a smile in your heart, shed no tears and, as he wished, raise a toast to absent friends.
