Martin, Regimental Sgt. Maj. Jim “Tooner” (23 Sep 10)

Age 70

With deep sorrow we announce the passing today of former member of the Royal Canadian Dragoons and former Regimental Sergeant Major of the Governor General’s Horse Guards, Jim “Tooner” Martin at Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie in his 70thyear. Last Thursday September 23rd, we received a notice from his wife Brenda that he was hospitalized with a mass on his lungs and brain. He had been unable to communicate for weeks but was able to understand what was going on around him.

For those who knew Tooner, his presence around the armoury was unmistakable and who could forget a waking to the sounds of Men of Harlech as a wake-up call from a portable radio on the weekend trainings in Borden. He brought the same zeal and humour to the cadet music camp he later ran at Borden w here he made sure that the young cadets could play Men of Harlech on the bagpipes.

In recent years, he joined us each May at the Black Hat Barbecue in Borden and renewed his annual membership in the GGHG Association. He will be sadly missed and remembered by those who served with him and the many young cadets who received his guidance over the years.

To his wife Brenda and his children Catherine, Tracy and Duane, we offer our deepest condolences.
