In Memory
Bastine, Mary Jean (15 Sep 24)

Fellow Horse Guards,
It is again with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of Mary Jean Bastine, one of our WWII widows, marking yet another sombre moment for our Regimental family.
Mary Jean Bastine, 93, of South Wales, NY, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2024. She was the beloved wife of WWII GGHG Veteran John Bastine, whom she married in July 1949. John, who predeceased her in 2009, remained devoted to the Regiment, travelling to Toronto for several years before his death to attend the Memorial Dinner and reunite with his fellow Veterans.
Jean and John raised their family for over 50 years on Hunters Creek Road in South Wales, NY. She was predeceased by their daughter, Peggy, and is survived by her children: Peter (Buffalo, NY), Mike (South Wales, NY), Tim (Kathy) (Greenville, SC), and Dave (Ann) (Wayland, NY). Additionally, she leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Jean was a cherished member of her community, dedicating over 40 years of service at Vidler’s, a “5 & 10” variety store in East Aurora, where she was known for her kindness and warmth.
On behalf of the Governor General’s Horse Guards Association, we extend our deepest condolences to her children—especially Michael, who has been our main contact over the years, and all of the extended Bastine family. A Celebration of Life was held in her honour on October 4, 2024, in South Wales, NY.
