In Memory
Barnabas, Capt. Bob (22 Jul 24)
Fellow Horse Guards,
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of former Governor General’s Horse Guards Officer and Association Life Member, Captain Bob Barnabas, at the age of 86 on July 22, 2024, following a prolonged illness.
Bob was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and had served in the Indonesian Navy before relocating to Canada, where he had a distinguished career as a commissioned officer with the Canadian Forces, particularly with the Governor General’s Horse Guards Regiment. He held graduate degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of Indonesia, as well as an honorary doctorate from Shiloh College. In addition, he served as a lecturer at both York University and Seneca College.
Bob was also a certified martial arts instructor in 4 disciplines. Those who served at the old Denison Armoury on Dufferin Street will remember his martial arts and self-defence classes, which added an element of fun and variety to the weekly training on parade nights.
Beyond his military and academic achievements, Bob was a man of faith who dedicated his life to community service. He was an Ordained Minister and Consecrated Bishop, and his humanitarian efforts extended globally, providing support to new Canadians, refugees, and those in need both within and outside of Canada.
On behalf of the GGHG Association, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife of 58 years, Elsje (Patricia), and their daughter Beatrice Anne. We are grateful for his service, dedication, and the joy he brought to all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
