In Memory
Baird, Maj. Russell James (21 Mar 25)

Fellow Horse Guards,
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of another ‘Black Hat’ who once served with the Governor General’s Horse Guards.
Major Russell “Russ” Baird was born in Toronto on April 28, 1944, and passed away suddenly at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on the evening of Friday, March 21, 2025—just a month shy of his 81st birthday.
Russ began his military career as a young reservist with the Ontario Regiment in Oshawa, where he later rose to the rank of Major. He then transitioned to the Governor General’s Horse Guards, serving briefly under the command of LCol John Burns. While many from that era are no longer serving, he remains fondly remembered by several of the ‘Old Guards who are still associated with the Regiment.
Beyond his service in Canada, Russ’ military affiliations and business ventures extended across the United States, reflecting a remarkable career dedicated to both countries.
For a detailed account of his life and service, please visit his obituary: Obituary
Russ is survived by his five children: Katherine (Ron), Emilie (Julián), Kerry, Deanna (Nathan), and Julian; his second wife Laura (née Knight); his first wife Carol (née Cannon); and an extended family that includes eight grandchildren. To them, we extend our deepest condolences. May the cherished memories he leaves behind bring them comfort in this difficult time.
A Celebration of Life for Russ will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m. in the Otter Room at the Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI), 426 University Ave., Toronto, Ontario.
Attire: Business or Formal.
