Age 91

It is with sadness we mark the passing of GGHG WW II Veteran and Retired Superintendent, Durham Regional Police Service, John Norman (Norm) Smyth, at St. Joseph’s at Fleming L.T.C., Peterborough on Friday, July 1, 2011, in his 91st year. He is survived by his wife Mary and daughter Lorraine and her husband Richard Schuett of Peterborough.

Norm served overseas in World War II with the Royal Canadian Navy and was a former member of Branch 43, Royal Canadian Legion in Oshawa.  He became a member of The Governor General’s Horse Guards in 1940. Following the war, he started his policing career with the Oshawa Police Force and retired as a Superintendent with Durham Regional Police Service.  Norm was also a former Deputy Grand Master of Lebanon Masonic Lodge in Oshawa.

The GGHG Association offers its deepest condolences at this time to the Smyth Family. A private graveside service was held at Resurrection Cemetery, Whitby. Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
