Italian Campaign – 1944 to 1945

Between May 16th and May 26th, 2019, the Regiment dedicated two memorials that marked seventy-five years from the date the Regiment fought in the Italian Campaign in the Second World War.

Aquino, Italy – Liri Valley and Italian Campaign Memorial

The Regiment dedicated the first memorial in Aquino, Italy on May 19, 2019.  The memorial was not only dedicated to remembering the first entry of the Regiment into the war at the Liri Valley but is also the key Regimental memorial for the entire campaign.  The memorial is inscribed with the names of all our fallen in the Italian Campaign, it includes a Maple Leaf to symbolize each Horseguard that was lost.

Villanova, Italy – “River Battles” – Lamone Crossing, Fusso Munio and Misano Ridge

On May 23rd, 2019, the Regiment dedicated the second memorial from the Italian Campaign.  The site is located across the road from the Villanova Canadian War Cemetary.  The memorial recognizes a series of battle honours in the area that marked the final days of the Regiment in Italy before they moved to Holland in 1945.
